Shalom and welcome to this edition of revealing the truth where we cover the headlines the heart lines and biblical truth I’m your host messianic rabbi Erik Walker I know prayer is important but I just don’t have time have you ever uttered those words finding time for prayer seems to be a major challenge and a great source of frustration for those who struggle with an effective prayer life prayer was never meant to be a burden and our next guest walks you through easy to digest lessons that will spark self-discovery motivate you to prayer and open the door for closeness with God so you’re drawn back to him more and more penny cook is a certified biblical life coach writer and avid pray earth she has been a leader in women’s ministry for more than 30 years and has taught numerous Bible studies whether coaching teaching a writing penny seeks to encourage and equip believers with the Word of God and see them empowered by his spirit for this battle we call life here to walk us through her new book pursuing prayer being effective in a busy world is penny cook penny welcome to this edition of revealing the truth thank you so much rabbi for having me here on our privilege you know prayer is something that everybody knows about they’re not a foreign concept if I were talk to you about the power and the anointing of the Holy Spirit you might say I’m really not familiar if I were to talk to you about the full council of heaven and the courtyard of heaven you might say you know that’s really not something I’m familiar with if I dug deep into the connection of Ezekiel 38 and 39 and the Middle Eastern or alignment of the nations you might look at me and say you know I’ve heard of it but I’m just not really fluent in endtime prophecy but prayer seems to be the simpleness of concepts addressed and explained and broken down even by Jesus himself when asked how should we pray knowing that the the culture was we were a liturgical people Jews in synagogue worship our liturgy is our prayer and it’s all based on the Word of God so when we look at this setup that the people that are asking him are Temple worshipers they they know but they they ask him now that we know the Messiah how should we pray knowing that they already have a foundation of Prayer now that’s not a means of praying for someone else that’s a means for establishing your channel to God you that you’re on the same frequency you remember the old cars we drive down the road and you have to adjust the radio the further away you got from the station you had to move the dial a little bit to dial it in until you finally lost the station well we don’t have that problem with the Lord we have a clear pathway if we establish that clear pathway now this is something you emphasize tremendously in the book but before we get into the book I like kind of to get get to know you this is your first time meeting me my first time meeting you and so I don’t really know a lot about your journey and your faith journey and this calling on your life to be a life coach and to equip people so where was all this birth take us all the way back to little penny okay when she was worth a full penny now you’re worth a couple Mills but with inflation but take us back to those early days well I was brought up in Massachusetts in a little northern Baptist Church had three sisters you know I was given a Bible when I was like in the third grade and I used to see my mom reading hers and so I just started reading mine I don’t remember anyone telling me to read it although they probably did but I just enjoyed reading it and so I’d read it every night before I went to bed and that just really built my faith it wasn’t until my early twenties that I actually had a born-again experience um you know I believed I read my Bible I went to church but I didn’t really understand why Jesus died for my sins why he had to die and when I began to understand that through a Bible study I was invited to I just embraced him all in and probably because of that foundation of reading the Bible and everything but um I felt born again you know it was like a light turned on and I understood things I didn’t understand before my desires changed I had a peace and a joy that I never had before so I know that I know that I know that God is real he’s given me his Holy Spirit as far as life coaching and you know I worked in in women’s ministries for years and I wanted a tool to help me relate to other women I’m not a counselor but I wanted something that would would equip me and so I for a long time thought about life coaching and just didn’t find the time or whatever finally probably about six or seven years ago I finally did it took an online course and it’s been a blessing I’ve used it in ministry and writing and been good you know you bring up a very interesting point first of all what part of Massachusetts I grew up in a little town called Billerica okay about 20 miles north of Boston 20 miles north of Boston I went to prep school up in the Berkshires oh nice and Sheffield so clinics Great Barrington Chevy right up there on 7a right across the border from Connecticut that’s where I went to prep school so the 20-foot snowdrifts were a way of life and that’s where I spent my teenage years after my bar mitzvah and then getting shipped off to boarding school and really never came back home you bring up such an interesting point you read the Bible but you still had the question why he had to die hmm and it had to be had to be puzzling to you so it’s always wondered um for some reason even though I was brought to church and went to Sunday school I just didn’t understand it what was it that you in this Bible study what was the light that went off for you to understand was explained to you that that under the Mosaic law under the Mosaic system that was in place at the time people forget there was no New Testament at the time of Jesus that everything was as he explained in Matthew 5:17 he didn’t come to abolish the law came to fulfill the law and the law was based on a sacrificial system and most people don’t talk about that anymore they don’t understand contextually that many Bible is actually a story of the evolution to monotheism from a pagan culture to Abraham then into a system of what we call the law of Moses the mosaic system of covenants the Abrahamic covenant the Davidic covenant the Mosaic Covenant and that these covenants had to be fulfilled they had requirements to them and everything that had to happen in first century Judaism until the destruction of the Second Temple until Peter was given the vision to embrace Cornelius a Gentile and that was the beginning of this reconciliation everything had to be done according to the law and when I began to understand was that sacrifice all the sacrifices that the Israelites had to make to atone for their sins and what I began to understand was that Jesus was that one for all sacrifice so when he declared it is finished most people would say well you know what does that mean they say well you know his life was ending now he was saying that the laws now been fulfilled then it is finished that which I came to fulfill has now been made full and therefore from this point forward there’s a new covenant or renewed covenant because we already had a covenant and said until God was renewing this covenant but now with all mankind through John 3:16 you know prayer has been a way that that and we had prayers for every sacrifice and we had prayers for everything that the books of prayers I have from my Jewish upbringing and from my training our volumous yeah this is the prayer you say over this when you dedicate a child this the prayer you say when you dedicate a home this is the prayer when you do this and we had prayers for everything and they were all laid out in a particular order and it’s still the order of the Orthodox and many of the conservative Jewish families still pray these same prayers today thousands of years later and there’s a consistency and and we take comfort in the consistency I can walk into a synod anywhere in the world and know where they are in the service yeah and I can be in Japan and know where they are on the service because the prayers are in Hebrew and so it doesn’t matter whether or not I can’t I can’t understand the the message I know exactly where they are in the order of service because the order the service is basically the same throughout all of Judaism and it’s all based on praying God’s Word back to him so this concept of pursuing prayer being effective in a busy world what birthda send you what did you see what did you observe what did you personally experience that prompted you to embrace this project well personally have experienced answered prayer but I’ve also experienced in leading women’s ministry and end through life coaching so many people who struggle with finding the time to pray or are just so busy they forget I’ve done it myself I’ll sit down and read my Bible in the morning and get up and go on with my day and think I didn’t even pray so I think we all that’s why I say you know if we had structured prayers we had to pray maybe we didn’t really better off but leaving us to just whatever whatever you know we just we get on with our busy days everyone’s going in a million directions so when my pastor asks me to teach a class he was setting up a whole new menu so to speak of classes on Wednesday night several years ago and I knew right away I wanted to teach on prayer it was funny we were talking about different books on prayer I just wasn’t finding anything that was speaking to me and not that there isn’t wonderful books on prayer there certainly is but maybe they were just a little deeper than I wanted to go I wanted to be practical and so I wasn’t finding anything that was God I could felt led to use as as the Bible study material and but the Lord seem to be downloading this acrostic to me and I was like bored but then such better stuff out there you want me to do that but I started jotting things down and it began to you know take a life of its own so to speak and I ended up teaching that acrostic and there was a lady in the class who has been an author and she was just starting an online magazine and asked me to do it as a series of articles in the magazine and it just kept going from there I was encouraged to write it as a full fledged Bible study started going to writers conferences and the Lord just kept opening doors and that’s how it was birthday have you found that there is this pent-up desire for people who want to have an effective prayer life but they either don’t know how or they don’t feel qualified and you’re a Bible reader unfortunately about 80% of church goers are not Bible readers so they think that there are certain words you have to say that it was the priests with the Levites and the the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the Sanhedrin and the leaders of the synagogue’s that were the ones who did the prayer on behalf of the people we had literally 1500 years of being told that the priest is the one who has the relationship with God you had to go through him then we had the Reformation that said no you can have a personal relationship with God and we hear that concept of a personal relationship with God and people don’t really know how to define that what does that really mean why do I need a personal relationship with God I bet in the Bible that if I believe in my heart and profess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord I will be saved isn’t that what I’m supposed to do but if we’re gonna live the full believers life and have full contact with Messiah and God the Father and the Holy Spirit all in unity there has to be a channel of communication open that is a two-way conversation and I think we’ve overcomplicated I think we’ve we’ve identified people oh you’re an intercessor so you’re gonna go off in a room and you you use somebody that has a lot of time to pray you have the gift of Prayer and so we’re gonna relegate you to be the prayer covering you and your team we’re gonna be the prayer covering and that’s going to take care of it but it’s salvations an individual not a group thing the last nation to be saved was Nineveh so how do we first how do we identify what the common objections the common obstacles are where do they sound like the people that are watching right now can say yeah I feel that way yep that’s that’s me that describes me what is it you found as you encountered people in these classes mostly just the frustration of not finding the time because everybody’s so busy I think what you talking about being it seeming complicated is part of it but I just think in this current whirlwind of a society people are busy they’re not taking the time to have a quiet time you know Jesus modeled going off by himself and doing nothing but praying we don’t do that so many people say oh well I pray in my car and that’s wonderful I think that’s one of the ways that we pray without ceasing but if that’s the only way we’re praying we’re never getting too fervent prayer and I think you know people are they’re okay with the popcorn prayers the the on the go prayers throughout the day that yes we’d still need to do but people aren’t fervently praying they’re not praying the parts of the Lord’s Prayer they’re not they’re not just praying without doing a million other things so that’s what I found the frustration with people is and yes we do over complicate it what is so we know that that people are busy we know that people don’t pray what’s the benefit okay what’s the value proposition people want to hear well what’s in it for me all right you know all right so you’re telling me I need to have a robust prayer life so what you know what’s in it for me how is my life going to change or my problems going to disappear is my cancer going to go away is my it’s my wayward kid gonna come home am I gonna make my ends meet when I when I couldn’t before I started to pray am I gonna get you know it says that God will give you exceedingly and abundantly is this how I get exceedingly abundantly and the prosperity and and what’s in it for me kind of approach but people honestly are motivated by understanding what’s in it for me okay so alright I adopt this prayer life what’s going to change what’s going to happen and and and that’s what’s gonna motivate me to do it because I’m going to be expecting a result to take place how do we address that first of all I would say first of all you’re going to get peace you’re gonna get strength you’re gonna get Direction there’s so many of those fruits of the spirit you could almost say that you get through prayer and reading the Bible but yes you’re gonna get more answered prayer you know it’s Psalm 103 talks about the armies of angels who do his will and that’s when I catch her years ago my son was addicted to drugs and I prayed and prayed for 13 long years and began praying Scripture and it it’s a long story just but just briefly my daughter was praying at college with her small group and they gathered around her to pray for him and one of her friends said she had a vision while they were praying of angels fighting with swords and I realized later that yeah I was praying Scripture the sword of the Spirit where angels really fighting with swords and we don’t know what goes on when we pray and so that makes me wonder what doesn’t go on if we don’t pray so if we’re all so busy and our world is going crazy our our country needs our prayers our our churches need our prayers our families need our prayers our schools I mean but we’re too busy so what might happen if we really got serious about prayer I think that’s a lot to be gained personally but in our in our families in our world if you want to first of all people are faced all of us are faced with family challenges or health challenges or family challenges its financial across the spectrum you have not because you ask not or how do you ask you ask in prayer it’s not a vending machine kind of thing it’s a relationship kind of thing if my daughter only called me once every five years and every time she called it was to ask for something yeah and there was no relationship in the five years prior to the call and knowing that if I gave her what I would want what she would want that I still wouldn’t hear from her for five more years until the next year came that’s kind of the the our relationship with God is that it’s we go right to God when there’s trouble you know look and it simply Lord helped me help me through this you know it’s always Lord do something for me but we have a charge as a believer as to what we’re supposed to do for him and it’s actually not really doing more for him it’s actually a call to do more with him not performance-based salvation but relationship based living out of life and if salvation was the end all and be all to life the minute we said yesterday Lord we be taken out of this earth so there must be reasonably stay there must be a reason that he’s given us his word and his word goes back 4,500 years and it hasn’t changed in 2,000 years and it’s still the same prayer we were instructed to pray and that has not changed the Lord’s Prayer has not changed but I think our understanding and application of it has so before we go to break I want you to take the acrostic and just tell me what the P what they are with the a with the Y with the e and what they are stand for and when we come back from break we’re going to dig into first The Lord’s Prayer and then into this acrostic and how we apply it and find the time and make the time to have it improved more robust more effective prayer life without sacrificing our family relationships our jobs all all of all of our time we’re gonna take a short break after you tell us what the acrostic means hey the P is for pro actively pursuing prayer Jesus said pray then like this so we need to be intentional about our prayer life our life will just take over the r is for remember his deeds this is the hallowed be thy name part when we remember his deeds we worship would be worship we get our hearts right we remember who God is and what he’s able to do and all through the Old Testament God said remember and don’t forget and so we’re to remember his deeds and his commandments the a is for acknowledge sin this is the forgive us our debts part of the Lord’s Prayer we need to acknowledge sin ask forgiveness and adjust our lives the Y is for yielding to its will but the why the thy will be done part of prayer important to be seeking his will and the e is for enjoy his daily bread obviously the daily bread part and and he is the bread of life are we just bringing him requests or are we enjoying him our daily bread and they are after you’ve done all those things we should be able to rest not continue to have anxiety about our circumstances but to rest to trust and listening in the waiting to because if we’re not praying long enough we’re probably not sitting there listening to what the Holy Spirit has to to tell us and guide us and teach us so it’s a two-way street it’s us talking to the Lord and then listening for the answers and having an open line of communication so proactively pursue prayer remember his righteous deeds acknowledge sin and forgive others yield to his world and joyous daily bread and rest in him as the acrostic we’re talking with penny cook author of the new book Eric Walker and we’re talking with penny cook author of the newly released book pursuing prayer being effective in a busy world penny welcome back to the program so penny when we before we went to break we talked about using the Lord’s Prayer as a foundation to be the launch pad that something that’s simple that almost everybody knows but how have you approached it in this acrostic of PRA ye AR and linking it back to the Lord’s Prayer well I feel like the Lord didn’t necessarily give us the Lord’s Prayer to recite although it’s beautiful and there’s nothing wrong with that but I think he was teaching us parts of prayer too to utilize and that you know we’re commanded to pray we need to worship hallowed be thy name part we need to confess our sins and you know desire and and search for his will in our lives and I just feel like when we’re so busy that we’re praying on the go most of the time we’re not utilizing those parts of prayer that Jesus taught and you know it’s so easy and it’s so important to worship worship just gets us lined with God shows us who he is and who he’s and what he’s able to do it’s so important to confess and many times we’re not really thinking about that when we’re just quickly giving him a list and we’ve all done it that’s not to make anybody feel guilty but let’s step back let’s take a look at this Lord’s Prayer and see what he was teaching us because psalm 66:18 says if if I had cherished sin in my heart the Lord would not have listened so might there be something blocking my prayers his daily bread we have no problem with that one because we do that one all the time right bringing our burdens and our requests which there’s nothing wrong with that he told us to bring our burdens to him but I think of it more as Jesus is the bread of life are we enjoying him that relationship in prayer as we look back at the ancient Israelites and the four hundred years mmm sorry the forty years in the wilderness of our daily manna and God provided for us sustenance and we only took as much as we needed we didn’t keep it for the next day because it would spoil and then Paul writes that in 2nd Corinthians 5:17 that anyone who’s a messiah is a new creation the old has gone the new has come so the only way the new can come is if I ask for forgiveness for my daily sins give us this day our daily bread and forgive us first our trespasses as we forgive others meaning it’s a it’s a it’s a two-way and we’ve explained to us quite carefully that if we can’t forgive others then then the issue of Jesus can’t forget the Father in heaven through him cannot forgive us our sins so it seems like this is essential it’s a part of not recitation and not a recipe or a cookbook of prayer but understanding the effective effectiveness of it so as we look and break down the Lord’s what does each part of it actually do for us because it actually does something it’s it’s almost like walking through six doors and you’re given the key to each one of these doors and it’s in the Lord’s Prayer how do we unlock that door and and why is it important for us to really meditate on that particular door before we enter through it we don’t we’re not on a race it’s not how fast we pray it’s not how fast we go through this it seems like recitation and doing it by rote that has no meaning is what happens but you really do lay out that there are benefits there is something that that takes you into contact with God as opposed to knowing about God it moves you to the knowing God right what does it do for us yeah contact with God relationship knowing him better worship certainly first of all let’s go back to the pita proactive if we’re not proactive we’re not going to get to any of the rest of it you know I think I say in the book if we’re gonna get anything done in our busy days we have to be proactive about it gonna get to work on time you’ve got to be proactive intentional about it so why are we leaving prayer off I always say put prayer on the very top of your list just put it there never cross it off you know anything that you can do to remember to pray and then remembering those deeds the worship again this is just a worship is so powerful we we get that relationship going through worship I haven’t been asked this question what does each part deux so I’m thinking as I’m going along you know we did we have no idea the power I don’t we don’t comprehend the power of God and what he’s able you mentioned earlier he’s able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we asked her think we I don’t think we really understand that and through worship we we get a hold of that it’s interesting today statistically we have a much lower expectation of golden anniversaries being celebrated in these last couple of generations it’s pretty common in my parents day pretty common in the 50s and the 60s and 70s to be celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary but we’ve taken marriage and kind of not put the emphasis on the relationship the emphases have become on the self I had out Silvano on the program and it’s been married for over 50 years and I asked add the question we were talking about a whole nother subject but when it came to his story about he and his wife I said I’m always looking to impart to Millennials and younger people some of the wisdom from more experienced more mature believers as to what they do to secure the relationship and he said to me something so interesting he said for 51 years we would not get out of bed and before before I would take my hand and place it on my wife’s head and pray over her and she would then take her hand and place it on my head and pray over me before we both got out of bed and began our day we have done that every day for 51 years and I believe that is why we have had family and the success that we’ve had in ministry and I think he’s the author of maybe 50 books prolific a man of God and it was he attributed it to the simple act of intentional prayer of never getting out of bed until he and his wife had prayed for each other that’s kind relationship think of what that did of their relationship not just their relationship with God but their relationship with each other well that’s a quart of three strands and you know people people are constantly talking about their marriage isn’t what they want it to be it’s a huge issue he’s not happy she’s not happy the kids aren’t happy there’s always something but it’s because that quart of three strands isn’t early thereafter the wedding day you know it’s a beautiful picture and the message but it’s not really applied what your book does it gives you the opportunity to effectively incorporate prayer into your daily life but with an emphasis it’s almost like with a if I look at my calendar my priorities what’s what’s number one on my list of things to do people are very prone especially those with to-do lists to do number one eye and it cross that off the list well what if number one was prayer if that was your number one priority because that was going to make everything else that you had to do easier your attitude about what the circumstances may not change and we have a can that we can have a really realistic expectation that there will be change but most often the prayer needs to be but let the change begin with me not with the other person and it that’s not the root of prayer is how to change somebody else changing ourself is prayer that’s exactly right so what what encouragement do you have that if somebody goes through the book and applies these principles what’s it gonna look like after I’ve completed this study whether I’ve done it on my own or done in a group what what do you think my life is gonna look like what’s gonna be radically different about me I want to go back to that worship part of prayer because I think one of the things that worship does for us is increase our faith and so as we pray and we pray these important parts of prayer that Jesus taught I think our faith is increased first of all our hope is increased we might see through going through the book the areas of our prayer life that that we need to work on and it may be different parts of prayer for all of us but in the book I have a assess our prayer life and see where we individually need to improve when we might be weak I think the book will inspire and motivate people to pray more to make that prayer a priority as they see that while this really is important and there is power in prayer and uh being intentional you know the revelation says if you’re cold not cold or hot I will spit you out of my mouth lukewarm we need to stop being lukewarm I think so many times we we don’t really fervently pray or pray consistently about something and we lose our faith and hope that it’s ever going to be answered and so we just stopped praying about it it took 13 years and I didn’t mention this earlier but my Suns drug addiction took 13 years to pray him to healing and he’s a pastor now God answers prayer sometimes it takes years and what are we gonna do in the waiting are we gonna give up praying we’re gonna continue on and fight because it’s a spiritual battle and we need to to take our armor and and fight that spiritual battle in prayer so I I pray that people would have a more committed consistent persistent prayer life and that they would see the effectiveness of that kind of prayer life as they go through the book what is your desire for each person to come away with you have an end game you have an end result that you want to see happen in their lives and knowing that any time we do Bible studies a certain amount are going to become very zealous you know there’ll be those that are zealous and then drift off and then there’s that that say you know that this is more than I can I can accomplish you’ve been teaching this for a while you have been incorporating into your life coaching what are you finding are you finding the impact and getting it’s trying to get to the feedback of the application of it because you taught it long before you publish the book what kind of feedback are you getting from getting positive feedback and encouragement to keep going but it will be interesting now that it’s actually a book in in hands who have never heard of it to see but my hope in my prayer is that we all pray more and more fervently and that we can change our worlds and our families our marriages our churches you know I’ve heard of churches you know having prayer meetings where only a few people show up do we really not have that much confidence in prayer um that’s my hope and prayers is that it would get people praying more and more fervently and that they will see the effectiveness of and the power that’s in prayer think somehow we’ve lost that that understanding that prayer is that important and it isn’t the thing we need to toss off our list it needs to be at the top and it needs to be done and God listens and God hears but you know we have not because we ask not so when we have a praying life and we respond to circumstances that other people bring to us or we encounter and they hear us saying let me pray about that or can we pray now about that and you’re a response to people coming to you and sharing is to break into prayer is to not hesitate but to come from a position of strength because you’re equipped so friend calls you and shares with you a problem where in the past you would have given a piece of advice you would have given a word of counsel you would say well when this happened to me these are some of the things I did but what if your response was is you know let’s go to the Lord first and and pray about this and then you lead a prayer that is moving and the response maybe is wow that was that was so powerful and we should be able to say to them not thank you but you know you can do that too and that that’s of many times I ask people have you prayed about this what does the word you know have you been in the word what has God shown you about this and so many times they can’t answer and that’s why I say you know that’s one of the things to sell was a burden on my heart but people aren’t praying you’re not in they’re not in the word they might read a nice little devotional but are they really in the word are they really praying about that situation no that just put a heaviness on my heart I find that prayer keeps you humble prayer keeps you in the place that God has you for whatever season he has you there so whether it’s servanthood or a leadership or whatever it is it’s he’s the one who has put you in that position and I I think we actually convey the message to God that we actually trust him when we do talk to him and then he can say well you’ve been faithful with the little things well the little thing he’s asking us to do is pray that’s the that’s the smallest of things he asks of us to do is to pray and if we’re faithful with that well then maybe there will be more in your life and God will be providing more in your life we’ve been talking with penny click author of the new book pursuing prayer being effective in a busy world what if you had the tools to take the time make the time and to be productive in a compressed period of time and not an all-day affair but a separate prayer time where you felt confident you felt that you knew how to approach the throne of grace because that’s how you got there somebody prayed you there and that’s how you got there you didn’t do it in your own strength and you certainly didn’t bring about your own salvation so there’s something that God wants more from you and that’s relationship we were created for relationship and the way we establish our relationship with anybody is by having a conversation with them talking to them and getting to know them better and we get to know God’s heart through his word but we get to express our heart through our prayers and he cook thank you for sharing this great work with us here on revealing the truth thank you god bless you we’re in take a short break and when we come back we’ll bring you the next edition of revealing the truth.
